Program Notes

Among the many folk tunes in Hong Kong, I hold Moon Is Bright closest to my heart since I heard it most frequently when I was little. Its lyrics is simple, yet it always brings me the dreamy beauty of a pastoral landscape. In this choral arrangement, much effort is spent on ensuring that each vocal line follows the natural tones and contour of Cantonese, so that the text is easily understandable for the listeners. I think of the piece also as a journey — it begins in our time, moving through each verse deeper into an imaginary world, and finally coming home, asleep.
