Do you have a favorite language to sing in, or compose for?

I recently received a commission from a good friend to write a short sacred piece. Now that we have finally settled on Psalm 150–who doesn’t love the exciting praises with every instrument?–I set off right away to study the text in ye olde trusty King James Version. The more I read it though, the less I feel connected with it artistically.

Here it is in KJV:

1Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.

2Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.

3Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.

4Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

5Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.

6Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

New site: almost there!

May 8th, 2010

As you can see, my website is undergoing some face lift. I’m learning as best as I can to make it a WordPress theme, and then hopefully I’ll also be blogging more frequently, writing about Madison music events, composing, and music in general. Stay tuned!

What do you think about this new layout?

WordPress crunch

April 26th, 2010

It’s about time for something new! I’m in the process of redesigning this website. The content will still be maintained, but pardon the changes here and there in the look and feel!

SCI Conference at K-State

March 26th, 2010

I’m in Manhattan, Kansas this weekend attending Society of Composers Inc’s Region VI conference. I worked with three talented undergrad singers on “Sparrow” tonight, wish them the best tomorrow morning!

Tonight’s concert featured Thelema Trio from Belgium. Interesting instrumentation: clarinet, saxophone and piano. And what virtuoso performance!

Tune in to WPR today at 12:30pm (CST) for Yuan Songs!

March 21st, 2010

Elaine Niu and Chris Cramer will be performing at the Chazen Museum of Art (800 University Ave, Madison WI). On their fabulous guitar song recital, they will be performing my Yuan Songs!
